Pollock-Inspired Chocolate Studies
Continuing my new personal project of food portraits in the style of modern artists, I created a couple of chocolate studies inspired by Jackson Pollock’s iconic splatter paintings. Chocolate seemed to be the natural medium for this, as it comes in various colors, consistencies and products, either homemade or off-the-shelf.
I started with a base layer of cakey brownies smeared on the surface for texture, then dusted the frame in spots with cocoa powder. Over that, I splattered chocolate pudding, then spackled on some frosting — lighter in places so the back light would glow through, and much heavier in other places for dimension. The top layer was different varieties of melted chips which I splattered across the surface for that famous finish that we all instantly recognize.
Praise be for plastic sheeting!
I’m having a lot of fun with this series and am excited to show you more! Turns out the styling is the most difficult part here, while the photography is pretty straightforward.
I’ve listed these images in my shop for sale as prints in 8x10 inches and 16x20 inches. Take a look and let me know what you think! I can always crop and print the images listed in different sizes, so just email me if you’d like something in a different dimension.
