Comfort Zones
As a commercial studio photographer, I’m generally pretty happy to be holed up in my shooting space working all by my lonesome while listening to podcasts. But sometimes a girl has to get out and shoot in the light of day with (gasp) other people around! While it isn’t something I do often, I always enjoy teaming up with my interior designer-friend Violet Lordi of Violet’s Designs.
Recently, she brought me to a house she designed for a client so I could get photos and I was blown away by the choices she made. The rooms were all large, some with soaring ceilings that could easily make the spaces feel cold and impersonal, but with color, texture and vibrant wallpaper choices, I felt at ease and cozy.
It’s a different way of shooting, for sure. I enjoy traveling light when doing this kind of work, with nothing more than my camera and a tripod, plus a speedlight that I rarely break out. I bracket my shots to give me room to edit, and work with Violet to get the angles she wants along with some details here and there that I think are important to call out.
It’s the little touches that make this so delightful — the adorable elephant wallpaper and the sweet ruffles on the curtains and at the base of the crib.
Just switching between food and product photography is enough to snap me out of shooting ruts I dig myself into, but throwing in some of this location work and now video and stop motion, I never need to be stuck again.
Violet and I have some exciting projects in the works! More photography, of course, but I’ll also be getting her website up and running soon. Be sure to check back to see more of her lovely work.
