Summer’s here and splashes are having a moment. Who doesn’t look forward to an icy beverage after a long, hot day in the sun? This time of year is perfect to explore splash photography, especially if your food & beverage business relies on those refreshing cues to get a customer’s attention.

But it isn’t just food & beverage-based businesses that can benefit from this type of photography. It’s such a dynamic look, which can be fairly controlled-but-fun,

or messy and ready for anything. It all depends on what you’re trying to say.

Ole Henriksen’s Truth Serum relies on a hefty dose of vitamin C to work its magic, so I knew an orange juice splash would be an ideal way to promote it. Orange is the color of health, joy and fun; when you add the right splash, it drives that message home in a big way.

Yeti is a rugged brand, known for their products geared toward higher-end hunting and fishing enthusiasts. Their products are beautiful but not precious, so I wanted this image to be stark and fairly masculine with messy splashes that communicate durability and a day spent outdoors. The challenge here was to make sure all of the logos were visible even with the wraparound splashes. It took a lot of controlled splashing and even more work in post-production, but this ended up being one of my favorite product photos this year.

Every photo shoot requires a great deal of planning, but splash shoots even more so. Because of the unpredictable nature of liquids, I like to lock down as much of the other stuff as I can. Also, with lights and expensive camera equipment on the set, you need to protect everything, plan where the liquid will go, and what you’ll do with it once the shoot is over. It’s a big job, but one I love!
